Welgevonden has always been a safe haven The rugged beauty visitors now enjoy was once the garden of the San people. More or less two thousand years ago the San Bushmen, called Welgevonden home. They lived of the land, hunter-gatherers, hunting the multitude of antelope with their wooden bows and arrows. Honey, roots and fruits of plants were their main food source. They lived in total synchronization with nature, posing no risk to wildlife or vegetation by over-hunting or collecting. The seasons and the movement of game governed their semi-nomadic way of life.

Today visitors to Mhondoro bushveld game lodge can only see the remnants of this once proud people in the rock art left as a memorial; a reminder that the warm soil of Mhondoro were under their feet and the same scorching African sun once shone down on them.

The bushveld game lodge consists of four magnificent chalets. Each chalet is decorated with care to create the tranquil sense of wellbeing, style and elegance which are tantamount with Mhondoro. The décor and warm style enhance the rugged beauty of the African bush.

The en-suite bathrooms, fashioned to entice, invite and invigorate, offer a choice of an indoor shower, a very romantic secluded outdoor shower and an extra large bathtub. The main bushveld game lodge also has a large sundeck where guests can relax after a long day and enjoy the abundance of animals which flock to the waterhole just before sunset. The main dining room, bar, and outdoor boma are situated around the main building. Other facilities guests can enjoy, include, a fully equipped gym, pool and pool deck, library and a fully stocked wine cellar - boasting some of South Africa's finest wines.

The San people unfortunately did not have the same luxury surroundings. Their homes or shelters were built with sticks and formed a rough circle. Some San families covered the stick shelters with woven reed mats for additional protection from the elements. The San people also had their own wine cellars; unfortunately, this was due to necessity. They stored water in ostrich eggshells and buried the shells deep below the ground to stockpile water. This ensured that they always had water in dry areas and in times of drought. They also had the ability to recover the hidden treasures with unmistakable accuracy.

Some of the activities guests can enjoy apart from lazing next to the pool include game drives, hiking and guided bushwalks. The game drives take place through specially equipped open vehicles with elevated seats, offering guests a better view of the surrounding bushveld. Mhondoro bushveld game lodge is home to 75 animal species. It includes lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo and rhinos. More than 350 bird species can be viewed at Mhondoro; a bird watchers paradise.
