What to expect

On arrival at Mhondoro your host will welcome you with a thirst quenching drink and a light snack before you set of to meet the permanent inhabitants of the region. On your way to the main lodge, you are likely to meet some of them, including elephants, giraffes, and maybe even a wild dog. You will definitely see some of the antelope species of the region. Guests are taken to the main lodge in one of the open four-wheel drive vehicles, giving visitors a better view of this beautiful piece of heaven hidden at the foot of the Waterberg mountain range. You will spot animals moving to the waterhole for their last drink before darkness throws its veil over the bushveld. Herds of impala, eland and zebra all come to drink at the waterhole.

Wide variety of fauna and flora

The malaria free area is home to many species of animals and more that 350 bird species are found here. The diversity of fauna and flora makes this one of the most attractive and scenic regions in South Africa to visit. All five animal groups that form the majestic Big Five populate the game reserve. Lions, leopards, elephant, rhinos and buffalos can be found in the game reserve. The well-trained game rangers of Mhondoro lodge will take you on a safari trip, either in an open game viewing vehicle, or guiding you on a bushwalk.

The game reserve is not only home to the Big Five but also gives shelter to the mighty hippo, giraffe and a variety of antelope, such as the klipspringer - one of the smallest buck species in Africa. The Limpopo province, where Mhondoro is situated, is also home to the Nile crocodile and the African python.
